The brick and mortar Portland shop has been slinging books since 1971, claiming to be the largest independent new nad used bookstore in the world. Though Powell’s City of Books—their headquarters—is located in the Pearl District on the edge of downtown, its online arm is available to everyone in the world. They established their internet presence in 1993, and its existence has contributed substantially to the chain’s growth. They currently employ over 530 people, and their book inventory exceeds two million volumes.
